PPTC Turkey Trot 2017

Name: PPTC Turkey Trot

Where: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY

When: Nov 23, 2017

For many New Yorkers, particularly Brooklynites, the PPTC Turkey Trot is an annual Thanksgiving tradition that’s right up there with the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce. Without fail, this “little” local race sells outs when the weather is still warm and we’re wondering when fall is going to start. For the first time this year, PPTC offer 100 bibs for $100 for the people who missed out on the early pricing. That $10,000 was donated to CHiPS, a wonderful local community organization which provides food and shelter to those in need.

Thanksgiving morning, the weather was not at all frightful. Instead, cool crisp weather ideal for running greeted the 2204 runners who came out to trot their stuff for five miles.

PPTC presents Bishop Ford with $12,500 check

Prospect Park Track Club’s Tom Meany presented Denise Catapano, Assistant Director of Athletics at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School, with a check for $12,500.

The check represents Bishop Ford’s portion of the proceeds from last November’s Turkey Trot. The popular Thanksgiving 5-mile event sold out of its 2,500 slots nearly two weeks early, cementing its place as the largest homegrown race in the city. It was sponsored by JackRabbit Sports and supported by New York Methodist Hospital.

PPTC Bishop Ford check

“This was our 11th Turkey Trot in partnership with Bishop Ford,” said Meany, president of the club, Brooklyn’s oldest. “We have been growing upon each year’s success. This past year was by far our best, and we could not hold this event without the partnership of Bishop Ford.”

Before, during, and after the race, members of Bishop Ford’s boys’ and girls’ track teams filled many of the behind-the-scenes roles needed for a seamless race experience. These jobs included filling water cups, keeping the course clear, and handing out medals at the finish.

The $12,500 will go directly to the track teams, and will be used to defray the cost of uniforms, meets, and transportation. Without these resources, the burden would be passed directly on to the parents of the athletes.

“Our original idea was to make a link with our adult runners and the student-athletes of Bishop Ford,” said Meany. “This has proven to be a very successful collaboration.”

Bitter winds no match for warm spirits

Over 2,200 runners braved the cold to cross the finish line in this morning’s Turkey Trot! The event was sponsored by JackRabbit Sports, supported by New York Methodist Hospital, and organized in partnership with the track teams of Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School.

You can find results here.

News 12 Brooklyn was in attendance and broadcast a piece on the event!

Blog wrap:

This runner really liked our turkey-shaped medals (so did we!) – and because she didn’t get one (sign up early!), this runner had some “trot envy”.

Another was scared of the wind but knocked out a really great PR (congrats!).

We’ll join RoseTintedVisor in saying, “YAAYYYYYYYY.”

Two of these runners started their “Holiday Streaks” off in our park! Glad you had a good time (and enjoyed the hot chocolate)!

Some photos from Team Runstreet.

Also from our new friend Larry Sillen there are 2 huge collections of photos, they can be seen here and here.

Turkey Trot 2012

Under a clear, bright blue cloudless November sky, the starter’s gun sounded at 9 a.m., sending 2238 runners/walkers across the starting mats for the 10th annual PPTC/Bishop Ford Turkey Trot 5M event. The pace at the front of the pack was swift with the first nine finishers averaging a sub-6 minute pace. First finisher Graham Shorr from Pittsburgh ran a 5:13 pace and finished in 27:13. The first female finisher was Christina Argueta of Central Park Track Club, running at a 5:55 pace and finishing in 29:33.  Congratulations!

Congratulations to PPTC’s first finisher Mike Goettig (31:04) and our first female finisher Marianne Van Ooij (33:19) as well as Bishop Ford’s first alumni finisher Jonathan Pineiro (30:00).

The story of the Turkey Trot goes deeper, however. It is a unique race that brings out a very diverse
group – former Brooklynites returning home for a holiday with the family, well-trained runners, walkers, veterans of many races and first-timers. For some, this may be the only race they do all year. All are welcome. Kudos to all the participants who brought holiday smiles and good cheer. We look forward to seeing you next year!
