Club Records: Updates For The Fall
Better late than never, we’ve got a big club records roundup for the fall racing season. Just because there haven't been regular updates doesn't mean that we haven't been running fast times. You can check out the entire records list here.
The most exciting record to watch was the successive lowering of the women’s marathon record. At the New York City Marathon, Mary Johnston set out to prove that her 2:59 at Boston in the spring wasn’t a fluke. She set out on pace for 2:55 and probably would have made it if she hadn’t vomited 8 times along the way. She still kept it together enough to finish in a new club record of 2:58:11. Three weeks later in Philadelphia, Jana Trenk also set out at 2:55 pace but didn’t know it because GPS in the early miles of that race is notoriously unreliable. She ran with PPTC member Alan Lawn and a couple guys from SBRC most of the race and kept on moving steadily as they faded towards the end. Jana’s 2:55:18 lowered the marathon record yet again and made Joelle Reeves a little nervous as she lined up at California International Marathon two weeks later. Joelle managed to hang on in the later miles to eke out yet another club marathon record by 10 seconds, finishing in 2:55:08.
Another noteworthy women’s performance from CIM is former club member and former club marathon record holder Andrea Imhof’s Olympic Trials qualifying performance of 2:44:03. Andrea might have lost her spot at the top of the club marathon records but her times from 2015 still stand as club records for 1 mile, 5k and half marathon.
Leiba Rimler and Rachael DePalma left their mark on the records board this fall, notching a place on the 10 mile, half marathon and full marathon lists. Leiba had a huge breakthrough winning the Suffolk marathon in 3:09:28 in the pouring rain, with only the lead women’s bike escort for company. Rachael rounds out the women’s marathon records with a 3:13:46 at New York City from her debut marathon in PPTC red.
Mary seems to be recovering well from the marathon and has continued to claim records in the 5 mile at the Binghampton Turkey Trot and 15k at Ted Corbitt.
John McElroy and Sean Quealy managed to improve their times and Tom Anderson and Adam Iannazzone made their first appearance on the marathon records. Tom made his debut as a PPTC member by winning the Niagra Falls International Marathon in October in 2:44:09, beating the next guy by over ten minutes. Sean was probably hoping for better at New York but still got a small PR that keeps him from falling off the top 20 with a 2:46:58. In Philadelphia in November Adam attached himself to the women’s Olympic Trials qualifier train and rode it all the way to an 8+ minute PR of 2:44:50. He didn’t race at all leading up to Philly so it was a bit of a surprise to some that he ran so fast. Finally at CIM, John McElroy got out ahead of the women’s OTQ pack and ran a perfectly executed 2:40:59. With so many guys running well under 2:50 it’s only a matter of time before someone gets under 2:40.
Noah Devereaux is perfectly comfortable letting Adam have the faster marathon PR and has spent the year focusing on shorter, less frequently contested distances. At the Turkey Trot he ran for 5th overall and managed to tie Ted Brakob’s 27:44 from last year. Then a little over a week later he finally bested one of Douglas Olney’s softest records by running 54:24 at Ted Corbitt 15k. Doug's 1985 Team Champs time is going to be much harder to beat.
Sean was late to Bronx 10, got his warm up dashing from bag check to the start, and then caught up to John in the first mile. John managed to cross the finish line first but because Sean started farther back he got a faster chip time. They both improved their records from last years race running 57:36 and 57:42 respectively. Two weeks later at Staten Island John improved his half marathon PR by one second. Tom had initially planned on running the Philadelphia Marathon but realized just how hard the distance is when you try to run it as fast as possible. Probably for the best he dropped down to the half and still had enough fitness left to get the last spot on the records with a 1:17:39. Lastly Sean managed to bounce back from the marathon in time for the 15k by running a solid 54:02.
Also a shoutout to the astounding 22 club members that ran under 3 hours in the marathon 26 times in 2019. Last year it was 10 and before that it was normal that only 2 or 3 PPTCers broke 3 in any given year.
