Message about Face Coverings from the Board
Everyone, we are sure, is aware of the directions that people wear face coverings in public. These have been reiterated by state, local, and federal authorities in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
We, as runners, have been acutely aware of these directions and their impact on our sport. Frankly, running while wearing a face covering is not particularly comfortable, and not the way that we normally operate. However, we all also have been either directly targeted or heard of someone else being targeted for running (or cycling) while not wearing a face covering. During these times of heightened fear and anger, the public at large seems to be taking a closer look at us and our actions.
Many people may feel inclined to point out that the science behind wearing face coverings while exercising is dubious at best. You may point to the fact that most guidance from the CDC and other authorities do not state that people should wear masks while exercising, assuming that they can maintain social distancing.
The Prospect Park Track Club Board understands that there may be a question as to the scientific justifications for wearing a face covering while running. However, we also recognize that this is not simply a scientific issue, but also is a matter of being good run citizens in our communities. Wearing a face covering while running will help settle the nerves of our neighbors, readily and visibly conveying our concern for the well being of our community, while posing only a minor inconvenience to us.
Based on this, the Board requests that, until further notice, all members wear a face covering while running or cycling. This is particularly important if you are wearing clothing identifying yourself as a member of Prospect Park Track Club.
This should not be construed as overriding any of the recommendations regarding proper social distancing. Please maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others at all times.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to board@pptc.org. Thank you, and happy running.
